Spirulina is the botanical name of a blue-green algae that is barely half a millimeter long. In Latin the word Spirulina means “little spiral”, referring to the algae’s spiral structure. Spirulina is one of the oldest forms of life. This primeval nutrition has been growing on earth for 3.5 billion years.
Spirulina can only thrive in extremely alkaline water (pH approximately 9-11, drinking water has a pH of 7). It grows wild in Lake Chad and Lake Nakuru in Africa and in Lake Texcoco in Mexico. Spirulina is not actually a marine algae. Today, Spirulina is carefully cultivated in special water-farms in subtropical regions. Spirulina is farmed in Hawaii, California, Thailand, Taiwan, India, China and elsewhere. The farms are situated in subtropical areas around de 20th parallel. Marcus Rohrer Spirulina® grows on the sunshine island of Hawaii.
Hawaii: Optimum climate for Spirulina
Marcus Rohrer Spirulina® grows on the sunshine island of Hawaii (Big Island). The facility is among the largest and most modern water-farms in the world. The basins, which are approximately 200 m long, are situated on a dust-free old lava field directly alongside the Pacific Ocean. The unique mixture of water in the basins is a blend of fresh water from the upland rainforest and deep seawater. The seawater, which is pumped up from a depth of 2000 ft, is exceptionally clean and very rich in minerals. It contains over 90 trace elements, and has not been in contact with the atmosphere for over 2500 years. No other Spirulina is grown with such a rich source of naturally-occurring nutrients! The climate is ideal: the sun shines all year round, and a constant sea breeze ensures that the air is clear and pure. Because the surroundings consist of lava rock, no dust can blow up and fall into the basins. Due to the special climate, the high level of exposure to sunlight and the optimal composition of the water, the algae have, over the years, adapted to their environment and have continued to develop. The original species, ‘Spirulina platensis’, has given rise to the ‘Spirulina Platensis Pacifica’ , which is larger, faster-growing and richer in beta-carotene. Spirulina Pacifica is not genetically modified and is cultivated according to ecological guidelines, without the use of herbicides or pesticides.
How Marcus Rohrer Spirulina® is grown
The basins are situated directly on lava rock. Foodgrade sheeting is laid across the 30-cm-high lava ridges, employing a technique similar to that used when building a garden pond. The water in the basins is only 20 cm deep and is continuously kept in motion by means of slowly rotating paddle wheels. This ensures that each individual algae receives an optimal amount of sunlight. The Spirulina algae grow at a water temperature of approximately 30° – 35°C and only in sunny conditions. Without sunlight they stop growing. The lava absorbs heat from the sun during the day and radiates it at night. Thus the water remains warm at night. After seven days the spiral filaments have reproduced to such an extent that they can be filter harvested, washed and dried. Then the algae paste is rinsed clean with pure water and immediately dried, and the fresh Spirulina powder is ready! The entire process only takes 15 minutes.
Finest quality from Hawaii
The original Marcus Rohrer Spirulina® is manufactured from the best quality Spirulina algae from Hawaii. Hawaiian Spirulina is not genetically manipulated and is grown following ecological directives, without the use of pesticides or herbicides. Daily inspections during the growing period and a strict final inspection guarantee exceptional quality. Immediately after harvesting, the fresh algae are dried at low temperature. This takes place within 5 seconds using the ‘Ocean Chill™‘ drying system: The valuable nutrients cannot oxidise because oxygen free air is used. All phytonutrients and enzymes are thus fully preserved! Via a unique procedure, the fresh algae powder is processed into tablets and capsules and immediately packaged in Miron® glass-foil: this guarantees optimal protection during the transport from Hawaii to the Netherlands. Once in the Netherlands, Spirulina is tapped into Miron® glass. In this patented violet glass, Marcus Rohrer Spirulina® retains its original powers and remains fresh much longer. One hundred percent pure concentrated nature, directly from the source!

‘Power Food’ of the Aztecs
Centuries ago, the Aztecs and the Mayas realized the great value and the healing properties of Spirulina algae and regularly enjoyed this superb source of vegetable nutrition. It was a sort of ‘power-food’ for them that gave energy quickly and increased stamina. Unfortunately the Spanish brutally ended the advanced Aztec culture and Spirulina fell into obscurity.
In 1964, the Belgian botanist, Jean Leonard rediscovered this remarkable ltiny algae. Extensive research soon revealed what the Aztecs had known about a long time before – Spirulina is one of the richest sources of vitamins and minerals that nature has to offer. It was therefore not really all that surprising when, at the World Food Conference in 1974, the United Nations proclaimed Spirulina to be the best alternative future source of food. In modern times Spirulina is renowned worldwide as one of nature’s richest sources of nutrition. Millions of people use Spirulina on a daily basis for enhanced energy, stamina, and improved wellbeing.
